Scholarships
Marusia Yaworska Music Scholarship
The Chair of Ukrainian Studies is represented on the board of the Marusia Yaworska Entrance Scholarship, which every summer awards a number of scholarships to outstanding students in Ukraine and Canada. This graduate-level music scholarship is intended to recognize the most talented person in Canada or Ukraine, and to promote music study. The fund was established from the estate of Marusia Yaworska, a music lover, pianist, and violinist, who taught performing arts in Toronto for 40 years.
Awards:

Minimum of two (normally, one scholarship will be awarded to a student from Canada, and one from Ukraine)

Each award is up to $5,000 Cdn. (non-renewable)

For graduate level (master, doctorate, or post-doctorate) study.
Eligibility:
-
be an individual of Ukraine or Canada;
-
be enrolled full-time or eligible for enrolment and intending to enrol full-time in a recognized music programme at the university level or equivalent, in Canada, Ukraine, or elsewhere;

be nominated by the student's school of music.
Application procedure:

Each school is invited to submit the name of one student as a candidate for this scholarship.

The 1998 winners were violinist Dmytro Tkachenko (Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music), violinist Daryl Strain (McGill University), organist Jonathan Oldengarm (Wilfrid Laurier University), violinist Marie-Caroline Bourque (University of Ottawa), ethnomusicologist Marcia Kierkosz (York University), and pianist Olena Shvetsova (Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music) ( conditional).

The 1997 winners were Oleh Bezborodko in Kyiv, and Denys Derome in Montreal.
